Snow days

We’ve had four snowstorms in the past two weeks, for a total of just under two feet of snow. That’s about twice what this area averages in an entire winter, and we’re not even out of January yet. The snow removal infrastructure isn’t really up to this challenge, and as a result today is the fifth snow day we’ve had in the past eleven days of school. Miss B and I are both getting a little stir crazy, and I’m having a hard time getting 15 quiet minutes to answer work emails, let alone sit down and compose a thought-out blog post. Hands-on activities are the way to go in these situations; here are some of the cooking projects with which I/we have been distracting ourselves:

- Waffles of insane greatness (because what better time to celebrate not having to rush through breakfast?)

- Grapefruit/pomegranate marmalade (because what better way to celebrate the bag of free grapefruit from your next-door neighbor?)

- Egg, bacon & cheese sandwiches (because you’re going to need fortification for a long day of playing in the snow and answering countless questions)

- Browned butter chocolate chip cookies (because what’s better when you get back inside?)

- Homemade pasta (because pasta is my favorite comfort food on a cold, snowy night, and is doesn’t get any better than homemade)

How’s winter (or summer) going in your part of the world?

Thank you as always, RL. We've got another MF storm barreling up the coast which is pretty much ensuring another snow day this week. GAH! I'm sure it's worse with the rookies in their disco sleds down there but at least we get the benefit of some fine cookin' advice. Yum.

Sounds like you've been having interesting food adventures cooped up at home, Nancy! :)

Celia, I have, and I can't tell you how proud I am to say that the marmalade in the picture was not only my first-ever batch, but also the first time I ever canned solo! (I've only ever assisted my mum before.) I thought you of all people could appreciate that. :)

Ugh. Winter can't get out of here soon enough for me. I'm tired of being cold!

One - thanks for stopping by! I am resolved not to complain as long as I have the Shoveling Machine (aka my husband) around to do most of the hard work!

We're having a mild winter and feel so sorry for the rest of the country that's snowed in!

Baking cookie is the perfect antidote. Warms the house and makes happy kids all in one go!

I hate to even tell you how winter is going in this part of the world. I fear you would throw snowballs at me. Let's just go with this: it was the kind of weekend that inspired us to go out and get a big-girl bike for our 4-year-old.

So sorry about your winter. Perhaps your next stop should be South America (aka Alabama)?

CBL - husband skidded home with butter reinforcements, so I'm ready for the next storm (expecting another foot tomorrow).

CFM - After spending x number of years abroad, lamenting how much I miss winter, I'm beginning to wonder why. Alabama is looking better every day.
